The two‐step mechanism for the transformation of an alkyne complex 1 into a vinylidene complex 3 could be confirmed by the isolation of the intermediate 2a having pentacoordinated iridium. The complexes 3 and their Rh analogues are the first square‐planar vinylidenemetal complexes ( a, R = Ph; b, R = Me; c, R = H, R′ = i Pr).
