Tellurium double layers, between which planar layers of iodine molecules are inserted, characterize the new intercalation compound (Te 2 ) 2 (I 2 ); it contains a tellurium modification that was previously unknown as an independent phase, which is intercalated by elemental iodine. Crystals were obtained by hydrothermal synthesis in concentrated hydrogen iodide.
