Trichloromethyl hydroperoxide 1 is unexpectedly stable; this discovery is of importance for the photooxidative degradation of organochlorine compounds in the atmosphere. 1 is formed upon irradiation of O 2 ‐saturated chloroform with sunlight; it reacts with N 2 O 5 to give 2 and with acetyl chloride to give the perester 3 .
