The novel cations 3 and 4 containing a diborylamine moiety are isoelectronic with allyl cations and thus likewise extremely stable. 4 is formed directly on rection of the borane 1 with R 2 BBr, while 3 is formed via the intermediate 2 with cleavage of halogen on reaction of 1 with aluminum halide.
