The first total synthesis of a linear peptide alkaloid , namely hexaacetylcelenamide A, which occurs in Pacific sponges, has been accomplished. This synthesis concomitantly verified the configuration of the double bond in the dehydroamino acid moiety (R = COCH 3 ).
