A convenient entry to numerous interesting spiro[2.3]hexanes , which are otherwise only obtainable by tedious syntheses, is opened up by the novel C 4 + C 2 coupling of the carbenoid 1 with olefins 2 to give the spiro compounds 3 . This constitutes the first intermolecular reaction of a cyclobutylidene.
