Correlations between natural product synthesis and 10π‐arene chemistry are met with in the synthesis of the antibiotically active syn ‐benzene dioxide derivative 5 , which is in thermal equilibrium with the dioxocine derivative 4 . The eight membered ring in 4 is present in the twist‐boat‐chair form, whereas in 1 , COCl instead of CHO, it is almost planar.
