The transition from the dynamic to the static distorted structure (point symmetry O h and C 2v , respectively) could be detected for the first time in structural investigations on the TeBr   6 2⊖ ion. In the title compound, which is characterized by a strongly polarizing cation, the static distorted structure could be stabilized by reduced symmetry of the crystal field. This means that the privileged position assigned to the AX 6 E system according to Gillespie's VEPA theory is also refuted.
