The cleavage of P 4 by diphenyl or diethyl phosphinite OPR   2 ⊖proceeds with or without disproprotionation, depending upon the molar ratio. With 0.9 OPR   2 ⊖ , P 4 also gives the OP(R 2 )PP(R 2 )O ⊖ ions 1 and P   16 2⊖ ; with 2.4 OPR   2 − , 1 is likewise formed, but along with P   7 3⊖ . With a molar ratio of 1 :4, on the other hand, P 4 is degraded without disproportionation. The two P 2 ‐halves are stabilized as the OP(R 2 )PPP(R 2 )O 2⊖ ion.
