Do the changes in ν(CC) in visual pigments and bacteriorhodopsin orginate from interaction of the chromophore with charges in the protein moiety? This question was investigated by FT‐IR investigations on the model compounds 1–3 . That ν(CC) in them is significantly higher than in the unprotonated parent compounds suggests that the answer to the question is “yes”.
