The degenerate 1,3‐shift of the phenyl group in benzoylketene was demonstated by 13 C‐labeling. In the flash pyrolysis of Ph 13 COCH 2 COOMe, benzoylketene is formed in which the labeling is distributed about 1:1 between the ketene and the ketone carbonyl C atoms.
