The first spectroscopically characterized (η 2 ‐olefin)ferrates( – 2), 3 , are formed on reduction of the novel (η 4 ‐diene)iron complexes 2 with sodium. This reaction proceeds via a radical anion; high spin density at the iron is detected by ESR spectroscopy in the case of the reduction product of 2 , NR 2 = piperidino.
