Tetraketone 4 can be prepared electrochemically by reduction of 1 in the presence of ClMe 3 Si. Apart from 2 , the polycycle 3 is also formed (R SiMe 3 ), and is converted into 4 by desilylation and hydrolysis.—Phthalic anhydride reacts differently.
