The simple change from rapid to slow admixture of the educts is decisive in determining whether carbonyl olefinating reagents (1, 2) + CH 4 or carbonyl alkylating reagents ( 3, 4 ) + ethane are formed from MoCl 5 and MeLi in tetrahydrofuran.
