The ability to electrophilically methylate a cation such as 2 demonstrates the extraordinary preparative potential of [CH 3 OSO] ⊕ X ⊖ . The reagent methylates 1 exclusively at the thiazyl nitrogen, and the salts 3 of the sulfur( VI ) dication are obtained via salts 2 . Compounds 3a , X = AsF 6 , and 3b , X = SbF 6 , are stable solids.
