Blackish violet crystals of the mixed valence Mo compound 1 were obtained on oxidation of [(Mo III ) 2 (μ 2 ‐S) 2 (CN) 8 ] 6⊖ . The Mo III/IV species in 1 belongs to the rare paramagnetic binuclear complexes of the heavy transition metals; the Mo IV species is diamagnetic. Although the structures of the two complex anions differ only slightly, markedly different MoMo distances of 279.0 and 268.4 pm, respectively, are observed.
