Photoreaction of Biacetyl and 1,3‐Dioxole Derivatives: Modification of the Mechanism of the Photoreaction of Carbonyl Compounds with Electron‐Rich Olefins

The degree of charge transfer (CT) in photoreactions of biacetyl 1 with dioxoles 2 determines the course of the reaction: at low CT‐levels (e.g. R = H) addition predominates, but at high levels (e.g. R = Me) reduction. The latter systems dissociate in polar solvents into free radical ions (detected by ESR).
