The framework of saccharin and other artificial sweeteners is contained in the title compound 2 . The new route to this class of substances starts from the readily accessible benzothietes 1 . Compound 2 is formed via thermal ring‐opening of 1 ; intermediate formation of a tricyclic dimer of 1 can be ruled out.
