A simple entry to the preparatively useful monoalkylboranes (3) is provided by the reaction of BH 3 . THF with phosphorus ylides. When the boranes (3) are liberated from (2) by treatment with methyl or benzyl iodide in the presence of an olefin, a hydroboration takes place to give “mixed” trialkylboranes, which, e.g. can be converted into tertiary alcohols.
