Flash pyrolysis of the acetates (1) or (3) at, 50°C yields the title compound (2) , which was characterized by variable temperature photoelectron spectroscopy. When the products of pyrolysis are condensed at −196°C and then allowed to warm, a mixture of C 20 H 16 ‐dimers and acetic acid is obtained.
