A study of the course of the di‐π‐methane rearrangement ( 1 ) → ( 2 ) stimulated synthesis of the polycyclic azoalkane (3) , which opens up a convenient entry to the postulated intermediary diradicals by N 2 ‐cleavage. Thermolysis and direct photolysis of (1) and (3) are indicated on the basis of a qualitative energy‐diagram.
