The equilibration of β‐lactones of type (1) / (2) has been used as model example for studying the position of equilibrium of cis ‐ trans ‐disubstituted four‐membered rings as a function of the substituents. The mutual rearrangement presumably proceeds via a contact ion pair (3) (S = solvent).
