The oxidation of amines (1) with benzyl(triethyl)ammonium permanganate can be explained as shown in the scheme below. Side reactions can lead to acids and esters (R = phenyl, alkyl; R′ = H, alkyl; Y = H, MnO 3 H ⊖ ).
