p ‐Xylene and γ‐butyrolactone, taken up in the interlamellar spaces of the sheet silicate hectorite , were used to examine the possibilities offered by NMR spectroscopy as a method of studying such intercalation compounds. Using a pulsed FT‐NMR spectrometer, the degree of molecular freedom of an intercalated organic compound, the composition of mixtures, and even ketoenol equilibrium positions, can be determined.
