In order to derive inrormation on the geometry of the ethylene radical cation , the highly substituted analogues (1) — (3) were prepared from the neutral compounds with central double bonds. Cyclic voltammetry and ESR spectroscopy indicate that the planar arrangement becomes more difficult to achieve with increasing ring size.— (3) is particularly stable.
