The stabilization of synthetic membranes by polymerization proceeds—depending upon the monomer—either by conservation of the headgroup properties (a—c) or by Conservation of the chain mobility (d). Headgroup and polymerizable groups are represented with a point and cross respectively. Examples of all four cases are given.
