Brominations with N ‐Bromosuccinimide: Solvent and Selectivity

Correlations of the selectivity κ of a reaction with the refractive index n of the solvent used are new in physical organic chemistry. Such a relationship has been discovered on bromination of three toluene derivatives with NBS in ten different solvents; deviations were found for the eleventh solvent CCl 4 .
