In order to compare the reactivity of the bicyclobutane system and the CC double bond towards thiols , both benzvalene (1) and homobenzvalene (2) were allowed to react with thiophenol. Compound (1) is attached at the double bond and (2) at the bicyclic system, i.e. at the sites of localization of the HOMO.
