Fresh light is thrown upon the rearrangements of carbene complexes into carbyne complexes by the spontaneous reaction (1) → (2) . It is quantitative at room temperature, does not involve an ionic mechanism and refutes the idea that the migrating heteroatom X in (CO) 5 CrC(NEt 2 )X must have a lone pair.
