D,L ‐Methionine with OH in place of the NH 2 group (“hydroxy‐analogue of methionine”) D,L ‐ (1) is employed in the form of its calcium salt as an animal feed additive. The first synthesis of D ‐ (1) and L ‐ (1) now permits separate assessment of the nutritional value of the two enanetiomers.
