The parent compound of carboxylic anhydrides —formic anhydride—has now been synthesized in ethereal solution at −78° C by four different methods, and charactrized by 1 H‐NMR, 13 C‐NMR, and IR spectroscopy. The anhydride undergoes partial decomposition to formic acid on distillation of the solutions, even at low temperature.
