“Cation‐rich” oxides of alkali metals exhibit surprising structural characteristics. The bright red compound Na 4 [CoO 3 ] now synthesized (Na 2 O+CoO,Na:Co4.4:1, sealed Co tube 550°C, 20 d under dry argon) contains an “anion” analogous to CO   3 2− .
