Pteridines and flavines could have arisen under prebiotic conditions from amino acids and the compounds allophanic acid, guanidinoformic acid, biuret, and formamidine obtainable from NH 3 , CO 2 , and H 2 O. This concept is supported by the detection of compounds such as ( 1 ) in thermolyzed mixtures of amino acids.
