The stereospecific hydrogenation of a CC bond and addition of oxygen to phosphorus are effected by straightforward recrystallization of (1) , R, R′ = H and/or CCPh, from commercial grade ethanol. A side product of unusual structure affords further information about the reaction mechanism.
