The wish to study the interaction between the radical electrons prompted synthesis of the donor‐acceptor cyclophanes (1) / (1a) and (2) / (2a) . The absorption spectra do not permit any decision between structures (1) or (1a) and (2) or (2a) ; the ESR and 1 H‐NMR spectra rule out zwitterions with paramagnetic ground states.
