Crystalline complexes of alkali metal ions are formed not only by crown ethers and “noncyclic crown ethers” bearing two donor end groups but also by neutral ligand such as (1) and (2) having only one donor end group. The oligo(ethylene glycol ether) chain may be very short ( n ≥ 1, i.e. with only four donor atoms per ligand).
