1,3‐Dienes can be conveniently transformed into δ‐lactones (2) and (3) in two steps: the diene is epoxidized to (1) , which is carbonylated in the presence of transition metals. The overall reaction corresponds formally to addition of CO 2 , for which no direct method is available.
