The use of chemical methods, and in particular affinity labeling, has greatly advanced our knowledge about the structure of the active sites of ribosomes. Experiments have shown that ribosomal proteins and ribosomal ribonucleic acids participate in the structure of the binding sites for messenger ribonucleic acid and transfer ribonucleic acid.
