Is it possible to reconcile the great diversity of present‐day proteins with a unitary theory of the evolution of these molecules? The mechanisms of diversification of proteins are undoubtedly not yet all known, but it is clear that the linear construction of polypeptide chains lends itself to operations such as addition, insertion, deletion, and fusion. Combinations of these modifications would explain the development of an infinite number of entirely different proteins from one ancestral molecule.
