The reaction of two solid phases X and Y to give a solid compound XY v is taken as an example for the discussion of transport mechanisms and reaction steps. The following methods of investigation are discussed: determination of the rate law, marker experiments, and calculation of the reaction rate. It is pointed out that the investigation of powder reactions leads to problematic conclusions.
