Membranes are essential components of living cells. They act as barriers and pumps, as enzyme supports, and also as a means of protection. Their chemical makeup from proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, ribonucleic acids, and water is well known, but there is as yet no generally accepted model for their structure. It is also by no means certain that all membranes have the same structural plan.
