The phosphorescence of aromatic and heterocyclic compounds at low temperatures can be utilized for their identification and determination. The theoretical and experimental basis of phosphorimetry, which represents a valuable addition to the better‐known analytical methods, is described, and examples of its application to coal‐tar chemistry are discussed.
