As a result of the development of very sensitive equipment, it is now possible to show that the chemiluminescence of organic compounds in solution is quite a common phenomenon. Notable advances have been made during recent years in the investigation of the chemiluminescence of substituted phthalic acid hydrazides and related compounds. A new and probably generally applicable method of producing chemiluminescence has recently been discovered in the reaction of aromatic free‐radical anions with appropriate free‐radical cations.
