Hitherto, 2‐ and 4‐trihalogenomethyl‐pyridines and ‐quinolines were the only compounds of this type readily assessible by direct halogenation with free halogen. The particularly important and highly reactive monohalogenomethyl compounds had to be prepared by roundabout means, except in special cases. In the present article, a method is described for direct monochlorination of 2‐methyl groups in heterocyclic bases on a technical scale. A reveiw is also given of the preparation and properties of (halogenomethyl) pyridines and (halogenomethyl)quinolines.
