Abstract A comparison of known types of converters used for the synthesis of ammonia, and an evaluation of their respective advantages and disadvantages are given. A new type of converter is described, in which catalyst contact beds alternate with heat exchange regions. This arrangement permits both close control of the operating temperature at or near optimum conditions and utilization of the excess heat of reaction for preheating the reaction gases.
