Der zweite Schritt zählt : Die Arylierung von Pd durch Au verläuft über Übergangszustände und Intermediate mit starken metallophilen Au⋅⋅⋅Pd‐Wechselwirkungen (siehe Bild). Allerdings ist der Aryltransfer von [AuArL] nach [PdArClL 2 ] thermodynamisch ungünstig und findet erst dann statt, wenn sich eine irreversible Ar‐Ar‐Kupplung in [PdAr 2 L 2 ] anschließt.
