Daten aus der Matrixisolations‐IR‐Spektroskopie , der elektronischen Absorption und der Au‐L 3 ‐Kanten‐EXAFS (extended X‐ray absorption fine structure) lieferten die ersten experimentellen Belege dafür, dass die Grundzustandsstruktur von AuCl 3 nicht D 3 h ‐symmetrisch (trigonal‐planar) ist, sondern eine Jahn‐Teller‐verzerrte T‐förmige Geometrie hat (siehe Bild).
