Research News: Discotic liquid crystals were discovered in 1977. Since then these systems, composed of large planar aromatic moieties or inflexible macrocyclic units surrounded by „wing” groups (see figure, R = C 8 H 17 ) have attracted much attention especially in thin film technology. The development and future of these compounds are discussed.
