The conflicting evidence presented for and against the single ion description of photoemission data of metallic cerium compounds is analysed. It can be shown that for low T K materials the single ion description of photoemission spectra (in the cluster or Anderson‐Hamiltonian approximation) of metallic cerium compounds is valid. However, some of the thermal effects seen in the photoemission spectra are caused either by the temperature dependence of the Fermi function or by coupling to phonons.
