Two‐dimensional monolayers of classical metal nanostructures parallel‐plate metamaterials and nanowire metamaterials the sub‐100‐nm nanowire metasurfaces behave as ultrathin metasurface wave plates, not as polarizers as was commonly believed. This is due to the extremely anisotropic photonic spectrum, which stems from simultaneous epsilon‐near‐zero and epsilon‐near‐pole phase transitions in the 2d‐space of the metasurface. The complete change of spin angular momentum of light passing through tiny structures induces optical torque wrench effect.
